What if you could enjoy the classic taste of fish and chips—without the fish? Today, we present this classic British dish with a twist. The also very popular meal among Americans is known for its crispy fish, but in our Vegan Fish and Chips, we swap out the fish for tender hearts of palm. Hence, this delicious alternative promises to capture the spirit of the original.

Vegan Fish and Chips Ingredients:

For the Fries:

  •  2 medium potatoes
  •  ½ teaspoon baking soda
  •  Salt and pepper to taste
  • -Olive oil

Now the “Fish”:

  • 1 can of hearts of palm
  •  ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  •  2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ⅓ cup sparkling water
  • Nori seaweed (or any seaweed of your choice)

What about the Sauce?

  • 1 teaspoon capers
  • 2 tablespoons pickles, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • ¾ cup vegan mayonnaise

Vegan Fish and Chips Instructions:

1. Prepare the Fries: Peel and cut the potatoes into your desired shape (thick or thin fries). Then, soak them in a water bowl with baking soda and salt until tender but not falling apart. Drain and set aside.

2. Prepare the Hearts of Palm: Drain the hearts of palm and soak them in water for 15 minutes. Afterward, shred them gently with your hands and press to remove excess moisture, forming small “fish” shapes.

3. Bake the Fries: Toss the potatoes with a drizzle of olive oil and spread them on a baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 30 minutes, or until golden and crispy.

4. Make the Batter: In a bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Gradually mix in the sparkling water until you achieve a smooth batter.

5. Fry the “Fish”: Wrap the shredded hearts of palm in pieces of nori, dip them in the batter, and fry in hot oil until golden brown and crispy.

6. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together the capers, pickles, parsley, onion, garlic, and vegan mayonnaise. Adjust seasoning to taste.

7. Serve: Plate the “fish” and fries, and serve with the sauce on the side. Enjoy this delightful Vegan Fish and Chips with your friends and family!
